COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS OF BRITISH AND AMERICAN ENGLISH VOCABULARY

Abstract

This study presents a comparative analysis of British and American English vocabulary, focusing on the differences and similarities in lexical usage within the two major varieties of the English language. Although British English and American English share a common historical origin, their vocabularies have developed differently due to geographical separation, cultural influences, and social factors. The research examines variations in everyday vocabulary, spelling-related lexical items, institutional terminology, and informal expressions commonly used in both varieties. Special attention is given to words that differ in form but share the same meaning, as well as words that appear similar but carry different meanings in British and American contexts. The analysis highlights how these lexical differences influence communication, translation, language teaching, and intercultural understanding. By comparing authentic examples from spoken and written discourse, the study demonstrates that British and American English vocabulary differences do not hinder mutual intelligibility but require awareness and sensitivity, especially in academic, professional, and educational settings
