ACOUSTIC AND PRAGMATIC CHARACTERISTICS OF ENGLISH INTONATION PATTERNS

Abstract

Intonation constitutes one of the most significant suprasegmental features of spoken language because it enables speakers to communicate meanings that are not explicitly encoded in grammar or vocabulary. Variations in pitch movement, stress placement, rhythm, and speech melody shape the interpretation of utterances and influence the effectiveness of interpersonal communication. Although the acoustic properties of intonation have been extensively investigated within phonetics and phonology, their relationship with pragmatic meaning continues to attract scholarly attention, particularly in the fields of communicative linguistics and second-language acquisition. The article argues that the integration of acoustic and pragmatic approaches provides a more comprehensive understanding of English intonation and offers valuable implications for phonetic research and foreign language education
