INTONATION AND ITS PHONETIC FEATURES IN ENGLISH

Abstract

This article explores the phonetic features of English intonation and their role in effective spoken communication. Intonation, which includes variations in pitch, stress, rhythm, tempo, and pauses, is essential for conveying meaning, emotion, and emphasis. The study analyzes authentic spoken English samples from conversations, lectures, and media, focusing on different sentence types such as declarative, interrogative, imperative, and exclamatory sentences.The results show that rising, falling, and rising-falling pitch patterns, along with proper stress placement and rhythm, significantly enhance the clarity, fluency, and expressiveness of speech. Tempo and strategic pauses further contribute to understanding and listener engagement. The study concludes that mastering English intonation is vital for both native and non-native speakers, as it improves pronunciation, communication skills, and overall effectiveness in conveying ideas
