THE INFLUENCE OF SOCIAL, CULTURAL, AND EDUCATIONAL CONTEXTS ON ENGLISH LANGUAGE LEARNING IN EFL SETTINGS

Abstract

This paper discusses how the social, cultural and educational context affect the English language learning in English as a Foreign Language (EFL). Language learning is not a stand-alone phenomenon, but it is influenced by the social backgrounds of the learners, culture, and learning systems. The paper examines the issue of motivation, development of proficiency and communicative competence among learners in relation to social interaction patterns, cultural values, attitudes towards English and institutional practices. Based on the sociolinguistic and second language acquisition theories, the article brings forth the influence of contextual aspects in determining the language learning outcomes. The results substantiate the significance of culturally responsive pedagogy and context-sensitive method of instruction in EFL education
