TOPONYMIC BORROWINGS AND THEIR ETHNIC IMPLICATIONS IN UZBEK AND ENGLISH

Abstract

This article examines the linguistic and ethnocultural characteristics of toponymic borrowings in Uzbek and English linguistic traditions. The study focuses on the historical, social, and ethnic factors that influence the borrowing and adaptation of place names between languages and cultures. The research analyzes how borrowed toponyms preserve traces of migration, intercultural contact, colonial influence, and national identity. Comparative and linguocultural approaches are employed to identify semantic transformations, phonetic adaptations, and symbolic meanings embedded in borrowed geographical names. The article also explores the role of toponymic borrowings in reflecting ethnic memory and cultural continuity within multilingual societies. The findings demonstrate that borrowed toponyms function not only as geographical markers but also as carriers of ethnic worldview, historical experience, and cultural interaction
