Practical application of authentic materials in grammar teaching

Abstract

The article examines how real-life resources can be effectively used to improve students’ understanding of English grammar. Authentic materials include resources such as newspapers, videos, advertisements, podcasts, and social media posts. These materials are not created for classroom purposes but reflect the natural use of English by native speakers. Using them allows students to see grammar rules applied in real contexts, which helps them understand and remember rules better. The study highlights several advantages of using authentic materials. First, they increase students’ motivation and interest in learning grammar because lessons become more engaging. Second, students can connect grammar rules to practical language use, improving their communicative competence. Third, authentic materials encourage active participation through discussions, writing exercises, and speaking tasks. The article also addresses challenges, such as the difficulty of some authentic texts, which may be too advanced for certain students. Teachers must carefully select and adapt materials to suit students’ levels. Overall, the study concludes that authentic materials, when thoughtfully applied, make grammar teaching more interactive, practical, and effective, helping students use English naturally in everyday situations
