ADAPTING TEACHING MATERIALS FOR DIFFERENT AGE GROUPS IN THE LANGUAGE CLASSROOM

Abstract

This article examines the importance of adapting teaching materials according to learners’ age in the language classroom. While much attention is traditionally given to adapting materials for mixed-ability groups, age-related adaptation represents an equally significant aspect of effective lesson planning. The paper discusses how cognitive development, emotional maturity, interests, and learning preferences vary across age groups and how these factors influence the suitability of teaching materials. Through practical examples, including the adaptation of writing and speaking tasks, the article demonstrates how teachers can personalise textbook activities to make them more meaningful, engaging, and relevant to learners’ real-life experiences. Special attention is given to the challenges of using materials designed for adults with younger learners and vice versa
