THE ROLE OF MODERN INTERPRETATIONS OF THE PASTORAL GENRE IN REFLECTING SOCIETAL CHANGES

Abstract

The research analyzes how contemporary literature redefines pastoral imagery by incorporating themes such as industrialization, environmental degradation, climate change, migration, technological expansion, and shifting social identities. Rather than portraying the countryside as an untouched paradise, modern pastoral works often present rural spaces as contested, vulnerable, or socially complex environments. Through eco-critical and socio-cultural approaches, this study demonstrates that the pastoral genre has evolved into a dynamic framework for critiquing consumerism, ecological crisis, and socio-economic inequality. Special attention is given to how modern authors challenge the nostalgic and escapist tendencies of classical pastoral forms. Instead of offering mere romanticization, contemporary pastoral narratives frequently reveal tensions between tradition and progress, nature and technology, and community and globalization. In this way, the genre serves not only as a literary tradition but also as a reflective mirror of societal transformation. The findings suggest that modern interpretations of the pastoral genre function as a powerful artistic medium for expressing collective anxieties and aspirations in rapidly changing societies. By reshaping inherited conventions, contemporary creators maintain the pastoral’s relevance while transforming it into a critical tool for understanding the complexities of the modern world
