Abstract

This article explores the concept of productive failure - an instructional approach where students are first allowed to grapple with challenging problems before receiving direct instruction and examines its declining prominence in contemporary educational practices. The authors analyze the historical and theoretical foundations of productive failure, its proven benefits in enhancing deep understanding and transfer of knowledge, and the factors contributing to its reduced adoption in classrooms. Through reviewing recent studies and educational trends, the article argues for the reintegration of productive failure strategies to promote student engagement and long-term learning outcomes
